This Grade I listed stately home near Otley is home to the Fawkes family, distant relatives of the infamous Guy Fawkes. The building dates to the 17th century but was remodelled and extended by John Carr in the 1780s. The house was much-loved by J M W Turner. He stayed at the Hall for long periods between 1808 and 1824, painting the house and its surroundings. In all he left more than 200 pictures for the family, many of which are still on display.  Another frequent visitor to the house was John Ruskin who admired the building and its Turner collection. “There is nothing like it in the world” he said. As well as Turner’s paintings Farnley is home to an array of antiques, fine furniture, and some unusual relics including Oliver Cromwell’s hat and sword.
