The extensive and impressive limestone pavements of Gait Barrows are worth the visit alone but the trees and plants that grow on and through them provide a home for a range of birds including Green and Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Woodcock and the rare Hawfinch. After exploring the reserve we'll make our way to Leighton Moss for lunch and an afternoon's birding. The RSPB's flagship reserve in this part of the world boasts reed beds, lagoons, woodland, grassland, mudflats and marshland and is home to a stunning array of birds. Bearded Tits, Bitterns, and Marsh Harriers stalk the reedbed; wildfowl and other wetland birds flock to the lagoons; and a whole host of other species can be found round every corner.
