Two people playing walking cricket

The Sport Appreciation Group has been renamed the ‘Sport Group’, ie we have ceased to SAG. No longer simply appreciating sport, we now throw ourselves metaphorically into the hectic demands of Walking Cricket in spring and summer and snooker or darts in the darker seasons. We number 20 odd with a regular turn-out for the WC of 12 to 16 and 8 to 10 for the indoor activities in autumn and winter, but new members are always welcome. If you are of a competitive, win at all cost Aussie temperament, this is definitely NOT for you! Creative accountancy has oft been employed to engineer an exciting finish to the cricket matches. In other words, we play strictly for fun and it’s good exercise, as everyone is either batting, bowling or fielding the whole time. The action unfolds at Settle Cricket Club, 3 to 5 pm every Monday, April to September and fortnightly, 4 to 6 pm on Mondays in Settle Social Club from October to March.

Status:Active, open to new members
When: Weekly on Mondays

LATEST NEWS

The Walking Cricket season sadly ended on 29 Sep and u3a funds would not run (walk?) to us playing in sunnier climes over the winter. So now we exercise our unbelievable skills fortnightly at darts and snooker at Settle Social Club at 4pm on alternate Mondays. But, as a final cricketing hurrah for 2025, an ‘Owzthat’ tournament was held in the Golden Lion on 27 Oct when nine competitors locked horns in pursuit of a much-valued trophy. If you are unaware of this little gem of a game, it comprises two small cylinders and generates tremendous fun. The winner, a wild card as Les’s carer, was Chris Chandler, who lifted the trophy beating Sarah Moorhouse, our Walking Cricketer of 2025, in the final amidst much mirth. What larks! Ian Gray

Match Report - 29 September 2025

The Walking Cricket season finished on a high with two six-a-side teams involved in a close finish. A wicket fell in the last over and the winning ‘walk’ was scored off the penultimate ball of the match.

During the break Sarah Moorhouse was presented with the Walking Cricketer of the Year Award, as ‘the embodiment of the fun ethos of the WC group’. Alongside her in the photograph is last year's winner Jane Naik. [Yes, she does seem to be distancing herself from the trophy!]

In the innings break we were also regaled by Peter Metcalfe’s account of his meeting with Geoffrey Boycott, who signed his bat but declined to join our Walking Cricket group. Too frivolous? I then claimed credit for Nottinghamshire’s success in the County Championship on the grounds that I coached their coach, Peter Moores, when he was in my U12 squad in Macclesfield fifty years ago. And now for Darts and Snooker, 4.00—6.00 pm fortnightly on Mondays at Settle Social Club, starting October 6th. Enter by the rear after 3.50 pm. Ian Gray

[Editor's Note: if you are wondering how Peter got to meet the great man it was because Geoffrey had got hold of a copy of Peter's book, The Ball Hit My Bat, and invited him to Headingley. How did Mr Boycott come to get hold of a copy of Peter's book? Peter sent it to him!]
